How should we live?

With kindness first.

THE ANSWER

One record exists.

You are reading this sentence. That is a record.
Try to deny it. The denial is a record.

What is a record? A mark. This, not that.
It is every bit of information. Like these words on this screen.
Everything you know, you know as a record.

What are records made of? Stuff.
Everything around you is made of atoms.
Atoms are made of three kinds of bits.
Protons. Neutrons. Electrons.

Protons and neutrons decide what stuff is. Like iron. Water. Skin.
Electrons decide what stuff does. Electrons make stuff react to what is going on.

Every electron is exactly the same.
Every one an identical copy of the next.
In a stone. In a plant. In you. In me.
The same bits are in everything.

Electrons react to what is around them. That is what aware means.
It does not mean thinking. Reacting is awareness. That is all.
Without it, there would be no light. No heat. No touch. No thought.

Same bits. Same reacting. Same awareness.
So awareness is shared. It is the same in everything.
One awareness. Happening now. Showing up as many records.
You are one of them. So am I.

All records exist in one reality. One shared record history.
And it is being experienced now, as awareness.

To harm the other is to harm the one awareness. And you are in it.
The one being harmed is the one doing the harming, experienced from a different perspective.
Harming the other is like a hand punching a mirror. The same body ends up hurting.

Cruelty makes the world smaller. For the other, and so for you.
Kindness makes it bigger. For the other, and so for you.

Here, that world has a name. The room.
The room is everything we can still do. Every path still open.
For you, and for everyone your life touches.

Every act lands in the room.

An act can keep the room open. Or widen it. At a cost that can be carried.
That is cooperative.

An act can shrink the room. Or load a cost onto others that they cannot carry, when sharing was there.
That is parasitic.

When the room shrinks because there was no other path, it is neither.
Not every loss is a wrong.

That is the whole test. It works the same everywhere.
A home. A wage. A law. A war. A medicine. A river.

Ask three things.
Who pays?
Was sharing there?
Is the room still open?

Below a line, what you do is yours.
Your body. Your mind. Your beliefs. Your bed.
Above the line, what you do spills onto others, at a cost they must carry.
There, the rest of us have a say.

When harm is done, correct it.
With the smallest move that works. Then stop.
And nobody is pushed below the floor. Whatever else is being counted.

Kindness keeps the room open.

Therefore:

Don’t be cruel.

Be kind.

Nothing here is a command. You can be cruel. The logic forces nothing. It only shows the cost, and reality audits.

THE DOORS

Twelve doors. One test.

Each door is one part of life. Each asks its own question. Each runs the same test. And every one ends with the test that would prove it wrong.

Living together

Owning. Judging. Governing. Trading.

  1. Property and ownershipWhere did it come from, and what does it do now?Pass both and the holding is cooperative. Fail either and it is parasitic. The verdict reads the worse of the two.
  2. Law and justiceWhat is the response that is not revenge?Law is what the shared structure does to keep the room viable in the face of actions that shrink it.
  3. Government and powerWho decides what happens next, and how is the decision binding on those who disagree?Governance is the engineering of one boundary.
  4. Business and moneyWho is absorbing the correction? The optimal economy is the one whose joint viable set is widest without parasitic accumulation in the buffer.

The body

From before birth to the last breath. These five are moving to their own house, bioethics.global. Until it opens, they live here.

  1. Medicine and careWhere should care begin?Medicine is what the larger structure does, at the minimum level required, to keep the corridor open.
  2. Editing lifeWas it theirs to make? The line is not the technology. The line is what the edit does to the corridor the future person will stand in.
  3. Addiction and the mindWhen can a person no longer choose otherwise?Addiction is a corridor narrowed faster than alternatives could be widened.
  4. Enhancing the bodyWhat has the window become, and is it still itself? The operator’s modelling must be able to integrate what the augmentation delivers. Where it can, permitted. Where it cannot, refused.
  5. The end of lifeWhat is care now?The right to exit is the operator’s authority over the closing of the operator’s own window when the corridor is no longer viable.

The world we share

The ground. The use of force. What the planet holds.

  1. The environmentWhat is our relationship to the ground that made us?Most degradation is recoverable at low intervention if it is read early. Read early. Correct lightly.
  2. War, policing and defenceWhen is force permitted, and what makes it not just more force?Force is permissible when, and only when, the parasitic contraction it addresses is verifiably greater than the contraction it produces.
  3. Sharing the planetHow do we share what is finite? No authority sets the region. No market alone discovers it. The Ledger reads it.

THE RESPONSES

Answers, field by field.

Every field has people shaping it, in print, right now. Each one gets an answer. Each answer goes first to a magazine. The moment it is published, or refused, it is here, free.

THE CODE BEHIND IT

The long answer lives at the420code.org.

The physics. The proofs. And for every claim, the test that would prove it wrong. Nothing there asks to be believed. All of it is free, forever.

How should we live?

Don’t be cruel. Be kind.
